24/07/2018 – Hunting For A Deal

Yesterday new foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt warned that without a “change in approach from the EU negotiators”, there is now a “very real risk of a Brexit no deal by accident”.

Hunt called for “more flexibility and creativity” to secure a deal in a speech in Berlin. He said that “many” in the EU believed they just had to “wait long enough and Britain will blink” but “that’s not going to happen”. He also warned that “unintended geopolitical consequences” with just Vladimir Putin “rejoicing” if there was no deal.

Germanys foreign minister, Heiko Maas, who held the talks with Mr Hunt, said: “We know that everyone has to make mutual concessions to get this deal done. Hunt seemed optimistic even in the event of a no deal as it would be “challenging” but the UK would still “thrive economically”.

Hunt’s visit marks the start of a cabinet tour of European capitals over the summer, as the clock counts down to Brexit day on 29 March 2019.
